With media coverage provided by CHEK TV, volunteers, residents, Oak Bay Mayor Nils Jensen and his wife Jean and Councillors Pam Copley, Cairine Green, John Herbert and his wife Ann and their family, Michelle Kirby and her family, Kevin Murdoch and his daughter, members of the Oak Bay Parks and Rec Commission and Parks and Rec Commission general manager Ray Herman and his wife, all joined with the Community Association of Oak Bay and Friends of Uplands Park to celebrate Earth Day in Oak Bay. Mingling with the crowd was Times Colonist reporter Kim Westad and her husband Adrian with their dog and OB resident and MLA hopeful Jessica Van der Veen.
Walking to Cattle Point from Municipal Hall was part of the celebration and once at our destination, there was a band, various displays, a children’s treasure hunt, a clean-up garbage excursion and other activities to celebrate this international event. Thanks to all the volunteers from the Community Association and from Friends of Uplands Park for hosting this day and providing a spectacular venue at Cattle Point, and to Thrifty Foods for providing their “green” tents. The new Uplands Park sign was also recognized.
And a final thank you to the residents of a home on Beach Drive that borders Cattle Point Park who provided electricity to the band so they could hook up instruments and amplify their sound. A great band by the way and great way to celebrate Earth Day!
